India shoulders the world’s largest burden of blindness. Of a total population exceeding one billion, as many as 15 million people are blind, and an additional 52 million are visually impaired. Among those are 320,000 children under the age of 16, constituting one fifth of the world’s blind children. Fifty percent of these children could be cured if adequate facilities and trained staff were available.

However it not all doom and gloom and thanks to the work of Orbis and other eye charities, children are receiving the treatment they need every day. Please take a moment to read the story of Sohail Sayyed and how he got the help he needed.

ORBIS is a nonprofit, global development organization whose mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness by strengthening the capacity of local eye health partners in their efforts to prevent and treat blindness. Through the principles of capacity building, local partners gain self-sufficiency in eye health care, and residents enjoy quality eye health services that are affordable, accessible and sustainable.

How you can help

ORBIS needs volunteers to plan fundraising events and raise awareness of ORBIS’s sight-saving work in developing nations. Our offices also need assistance on occasion with special mailings or other specific needs.
